Style Talk: Lilly Smeulders

Style Talk is where we chat with up and coming stylists to get their fresh takes on fashion and style.  This time, we had a talk with Lilly Smeulders from WA.

Tell us about yourself!Lilly Profile

Hi! My name is Lilly Smeulders and I'm eighteen years old. I was born here in Perth, and have lived here all my life. I'm currently studying marketing and psychology in my second year at the University of Western Australia, however, I have a real passion for styling, fashion and the creative direction that comes with organizing photoshoots. I was first introduced to styling when I started a three-month internship with Perth not-for-profit Colosoul Inc., where I managed a team of style assistants in organizing shoots, runway shows and managing a small store. When the internship ended, I decided to branch out on my own to connect with other creatives and style my own shoots.

Who is your fashion icon?  What do you love about them?

Honestly, I have so many people that I look up to when it comes to fashion. I really admire the classic style of Brigitte Bardot, and also that of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. I love that both these women could make anything look effortlessly classy and well put together.

How would you style a t-shirt into different looks?

A white t-shirt is one of the most versatile pieces in styling - there are so many options! For autumn, my go-to would be to pair a simple white tee with a pair of wide leg jeans and white sneakers. To finish the look, I'll usually tie a silk scarf in my hair, add gold hoop earrings and my red Gucci shoulder bag. For another option, I love throwing a silk slip dress over a white t-shirt. You could dress it up, with mules and jewellery, or dress it down with chunky sneakers.

What is your number one style tip for an Autumn wardrobe in 2019?

I think my number one style tip would be to still incorporate colours into outfits this Autumn! As the weather gets cooler, people tend to dress in darker colours, but pastels and neutral shades (such as beiges and browns) can make for such a fresh take on dressing for cooler weather.

If you had to integrate one item into your wardrobe for the rest of your life, what would it be?

It's so hard to pick just one item! I guess if I had to integrate one item for the rest of my life, I would probably pick a silk slip dress. There's something about wearing a silk slip that’s just so elegant, and they're so easy to dress either up or down.

What's something you've reintroduced into your wardrobe?

I would say I've started to reintroduce pants and linen into my wardrobe. I'm definitely more of a skirts and dresses kind of girl but I found a pair of cream corduroy pants that I can't stop wearing! I wear my jeans to death, but these pants make a very nice alternative. I've definitely started wearing linen more as well, particularly shirts and dresses. I feel like linen gives quite a chic touch to outfits, and adds a bit of formality to an otherwise casual outfit.

Where do you go when you're in need of a bit of style inspiration?
Definitely social media! Whenever I'm lacking outfit inspiration, I'll trawl through the Instagram feeds of bloggers and influencers to see if I can possibly recreate an interesting look. Pinterest has been incredible too when I'm lacking ideas for upcoming shoots - I like to see what other stylists have created, footage from fashion shows and magazine spreads to then use as inspiration when organizing my own shoots.

Where can people keep up with what you're working on?

I currently post all my work (portfolio and behind the scenes) on my styling Instagram page - @stylingbylilly I also use my personal Instagram @lillysmeulders for more casual content.
